Among the most developed countries, including Japan, populations are quickly aging.

As of 2017, individuals over age of 65 represented 27.7% of the Japanese population, with average life expectancies of 81.09 years old for men and 87.26 years old for women.

This trend is bound to persist.

By 2070, the average life expectancy is estimated to increase by another 10 to 15 years.

A United Nations reports predicts that 16% of the world’s population will be 65 years old or older by 2050. (United Nations World Population Prospect 2019)
