先想象這樣一個(gè)場(chǎng)景：你和朋友約好上午9點(diǎn)去故宮玩，結果你在故宮門(mén)口一直等到12點(diǎn)，他/她才姍姍來(lái)遲。來(lái)了之后，他還問(wèn)你等了多久了，這時(shí)候你什么感覺(jué)？一定很氣惱吧？這時(shí)你的回答可以是"我早上九點(diǎn)就來(lái)了，現在是中午十二點(diǎn)，你自己算算看吧。"這樣一句話(huà)用英語(yǔ)要怎么說(shuō)呢？
老美們會(huì )這樣說(shuō)：I came here at 9 am, and now it's 12. You do the math.
Math 本身是"數學(xué)"的意思，而 do the math 則是一個(gè)慣用法，意思就是請別人自己算算看，例如我們的例句。這個(gè) "You do the math." 通常是在引出一連串的數據資料之后，放在句尾，請人家自己完成數學(xué)的計算部份。再舉一個(gè)例子，比方說(shuō)老美問(wèn)我："Do you know how far it is between the sun and the earth? (你知道從太陽(yáng)到地球有多遠嗎？) " 這時(shí)我可以回答說(shuō)："The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second; it takes 8 1/2 minutes for the light to travel from the sun to the earth. You do the math. (光速是每秒 186,000 英里，而光從太陽(yáng)到地球需要八分半鐘，你自己算算看吧！)"
"You do the math." 這樣的用法在日常生活當中十分常見(jiàn)，舉凡加減乘除之類(lèi)跟數學(xué)有關(guān)的運算，你都可以用 "You do the math." 來(lái)表示"我知道答案但我懶得算，想知道答案就請自己算算看"。當然你也可以用 "You do the calculation." 但這樣的用法遠不及 "You do the math." 來(lái)得普遍。
