漢字是由筆畫(huà)構成的。筆畫(huà)是書(shū)寫(xiě)工具在書(shū)寫(xiě)面上的運動(dòng)，大概有三十種不同類(lèi)型，有些是基本筆畫(huà)，有些是復雜筆畫(huà)。筆畫(huà)對學(xué)習漢字以及書(shū)法都有重要作用。下面分別說(shuō)明。注意，筆畫(huà)的中英文名稱(chēng)并無(wú)公認體系。

點(diǎn)——dot， 即tiny dash。橫——horizontal，即rightward stroke。豎——vertical，即downward stroke。提——rise或rising，即flick up and rightwards。尾部變尖銳（taper）。捺——press down或right-falling，即falling rightwards，flattening at the bottom。撇——throw away或left-falling，即falling leftwards，with slight curve，not very curved。折——break或turning，即90 degree turn，going down or going right only。鉤——hook，即appended to other strokes，going down or going left only。彎——bend，即usually concave on the left。斜——slant，即usually concave on the right。



復雜筆畫(huà)可以從上述基本筆畫(huà)組合而來(lái)，例如，豎鉤即可為'vertical’+‘hook’。每個(gè)漢字不同筆畫(huà)書(shū)寫(xiě)順序是固定的，即筆順。在不 同書(shū)體中，或在不同地區（中國大陸、臺灣、香港、澳門(mén)、日本、韓國、朝鮮、越南），筆順可能不同。永字八法（Eight Principlels of Yong，見(jiàn)篇首圖）包含了八種基本筆畫(huà)的寫(xiě)法與筆順。順便說(shuō)一下，部首叫radical；音調叫tone
